Sex, Murder, Monsters
Mark your calendars for October 18, noon to 3 p.m. to attend the CWC Centennial, “100 Years of Writing Excellence in Sacramento.”
You will be treated to a rare display of books by early members, scene setting symbols from our club’s founding in 1925 on topics ranging from sex, to murder, to monsters.
A jazz band will represent music through the decades. A slide show will reveal historical magazines representing print markets from the early years.
Enjoy a buffet while networking and meeting new writing friends. You will hear the greatest and funniest magazine and newspaper titles published by members in the early and mid-century years. Greater Sacramento Literary Awards will be awarded in accordance with our mission.
The star-studded lineup includes a former president of the Sacramento Press Club, a Pulitzer Prize winner, a Pushcart Nominee Poet, a literary agent, and a local network affiliate executive producer of streaming.
Author Kiyo Sato, 102 years old, will be on hand as a special guest, so consider bringing her book (Dandelion through the Crack; renamed Kiyo’s Story) to get an autograph.
At 100, our club has the widest lens to tell the story of writing in the early years.
Many members’ books were made into movies and one inspired a popular TV series. One member sold more than 2,000 articles. Another wrote music and piano instruction materials still in use today.
Another member authored a nationally syndicated column. The illustrator of one early member’s book was a native Sacramentan who went on to be an internationally-acclaimed artist.
Be part of history. Reserve your spot for the October 18, 2025 gala celebration.

Who’s Talking about
Sacramento Writers
The State Librarian, the Crocker Art Museum, the Center for Sacramento History, and the Sacramento Public Library Extend Their Congratulations
The California State Library extends its congratulations to the California Writers Club’s Sacramento Chapter for a century of honoring writers and of showcasing the value of the Sacramento writing community. Learning about the past strengthens our connection to California and each other, and encourages the next generation of writers. Hats off to all dedicated to the written word.”
Greg Lucas
State Librarian
I am delighted to write on behalf of the Crocker Art Museum Association to congratulate the California Writers Club, Sacramento Chapter, on achieving 100 years of excellence.
The California Writer’s Club’s second president was Harry Noyes Pratt; he encouraged the group to expand geographically and attended the inaugural meeting. A few years later Pratt became the Crocker’s second director (1936-44). From those early days to today our two organizations have worked, each in our own way, to expose and enlighten the public about our various art forms and encourage and mentor the artists who produce it.

On behalf of the Sacramento Public Library I wish to congratulate you on your 100th Anniversary. We understand the value of the written word to change lives, influence opinion, and educate the uninformed. The importance of supporting writers and supporting their works is even more important today now than ever. We must strive to defend the right of all to read freely.
